Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes

The core Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes begin with warm-ups, mostly comprised of aerobic exercise, which serve to improve cardio, and also help prevent injury during  practice. Typically three or four related techniques are demonstrated each class session, which are drilled with a partner to get a feel for the moves. Then there is a period after this where students are allowed to incorporate the moves they are learning in a semi live situation; the students take turns practicing the moves while their partner only offers 50% resistance the training partner typically does not attempt to submit the person practicing the move. After this, students are allowed to "free roll," where they incorporate all of the moves they have learned, either during this session, or from previous classes. Both partners start on their knees, in a neutral position, and spar until one is submitted. After free rolling students are encouraged to stretch out, which increases flexibility, and helps to prevent injury. A gi is required for this class.

Beginner/Drills Classes

Beginner/Drills classes also begin with warm-ups much like the regular courses, and continue on with move demonstration and practice. The main emphasis is on practicing technique with these classes, and no free rolling occurs. While these classes are excellent for beginners, students of all ranks often attend just to drill and practice moves. A gi is required for this class.

No-Gi

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is just that, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu adapted for use where one or neither student are wearing heavy clothing or a gi. No-Gi classes follow the same basic structure of the core classes, and incorporate BJJ with elements of Greco-Roman Wrestling and Judo. Shorts with no metal parts or pockets, a t-shirt/rash guard, and cup are required for No-Gi classes. This class is for advance BJJ students only.
