Common Questions Regarding our Adult Programs….
What is the difference between Jiu-Jitsu and other Martial Arts? Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective and proven form of self-defense. It was designed so a smaller opponent would be able to defend themselves with leverage and technique vs striking forms of Martial Arts.
What if I have no previous experience? At North Shore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy we have a beginner specific class and rotating curriculum so you may join and learn at any time!
Do I need to be in shape? You do not need to be an athlete to start Jiu-Jitsu. Our Beginner Program will start you with a self-defense based curriculum that you will learn with a partner at a slower pace, there is no sparing in the Beginner Classes and these movements will help you get into shape!
Do you offer a Trail Class? Yes! We encourage anyone to come by and meet us, view a class first or contact us for additional questions or to schedule a trial class.
What can Jiu-Jitsu do for your child?
Lets start with what to look for in any Martial Arts Programs for children.
There should be structure and fun! Kids Martial Arts Programs should be fun for the kids, but also be structured while learning. There is a time for play and a time for learning.
Martial Arts & Discipline. Yes there should be discipline in any Martial Arts program, but it should be implemented in a way that kids understand and learn from, and should have clear and set consequences when rules are broken.
Bully Prevention. Any Martial Arts Program should help kids with confidence and give them the tools to help with conflicts in a NON VIOLENT way. At North Shore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy we teach kids VERBAL Jiu-Jitsu as well as proven Self-Defense that the child can use if attacked physically, but this should only be applicable as a last resort. Kids are taught how to control and neutralize a Bully without doing physical harm (vs teaching kids to hit or kick, i.e. striking arts).
Fitness! Martial Arts should also help your kids with fitness and endurance, and always trying your best!
Friendships! Kids at NSBJJ are taught that practice is just that, PRACTICE. Of course kids should always try their best, but kids also need to learn that their team mates are their friends and not their competitor or the “bad guy”. Kids learn camaraderie and how to work with and help one another.
Most Important - EXPERIENCE. Make sure any Martial Arts Program is taught by certified and experienced Instructors who have adequate experience teaching kids and have passed a background check (Specifically IBJJF Certified). *Our Kids Programs are taught by Professor Danny & Angela Morera - Black Belts with over 30yrs experience teaching Martial Arts to kids.

Megan - We love North Shore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! Danny and Angela are truly phenomenal with kids. Each session is the perfect mix of fun, discipline, and development. We've watched our son's confidence grow tremendously both on and off the mat--he's become a little leader in his classroom. Danny takes great care to make each kid feel special--giving them nicknames, taking the extra time one-on-one to make sure they really understand a move or sequence, and compliments the kids in front of their peers--never a hand out, he genuinely means it when it's earned, which has given our son a real sense of pride and determination in himself and the sport. Angela's warmth and kind-heartedness is a bright light on the mat. It's obvious how much she cares about the kids and how much they gravitate toward her energy. Her encouragement each week has played a big role in our son's continued love of Jiu-Jitsu. We can't say enough about how much we respect and admire this duo! We're so lucky our son has the opportunity to learn from Danny and Angela! Highly, highly recommended!
Mike - “I’ve been training at NSBJJ for a decade and I feel lucky to have found an academy that puts students first. The owners, Danny and Angela, have created a community of athletes from all walks of life and as a father, who also has two children who train at North Shore BJJ, and working professional, I place a high value in feeling safe on the mats.
A strong beginner program, training partners who quickly become friends, and a beautiful training facility (equipped with changing rooms and shower!) make NSBJJ stand out as the best BJJ Academy in the area.
Know your lineage. We train the most pure form of BJJ, a true self-defense martial art. The head instructor in a 3rd stripe black belt under Roberto Maia (Carlos Gracie Jr./Renzo Gracie). Invest your time and energy learning from the best in an art that provides access to the legends.”
Amanda - “Outstanding facility and absolutely top tier staff. If I could rate above five stars I would. Could not recommend North Shore BJJ highly enough. SO grateful to Danny and Angela for the amazing environment they have created.”
Olivia - “Awesome place to train! The instructors (Danny and Angela) are knowledgeable, helpful, and fun to be around! They were very accommodating and understanding when I first inquired about joining their academy. I was nervous about my comfort level training during a pandemic. They let me observe a class and engaged me in conversation to make me feel at ease. The health and safety of their community is clearly a priority at all times. I LOVE going each week and feel like I am learning so much every class! Highly recommend checking it out!”
Nicole - “My son has been training here for years and now my daughter attends too. Danny and Angela are knowledgeable and patiently teach the kids valuable lessons. Even after moving away from the area we still continue to travel here for their classes. Safe, clean and friendly environment. Highly recommend to any parent wanting to help give their child self confidence.”
Mark - “NSBJJ is AWESOME! Danny, the head instructor, is fantastic about explaining why students do a particular warm-up, movement, or technique to ensure everyone understands how it will contribute to their BJJ skillset.
The atmosphere is excellent for growth, emphasizes learning and development, and strongly discourages ego and needlessly aggressive or unsafe behavior.
I'm looking forward to my next class later today!”
Will - “North Shore BJJ is THE place to train. I've been there for several years now and can't recommend them enough. The level of training is very high, focused on fundamentals, and the school has an atmosphere that promotes community and safety for both adults and children. Those students who choose to compete do very well, as instructors make a point of working the curriculum details with each person in a supportive environment. Whether for fun, competition, or good solid mental and physical exercise, go check out North Shore BJJ.”
Parker - “This place is terrific. Owners/instructors Danny and Angela are tremendously gifted, playful, and set a tone that's carried by the students. People at this school are impressively friendly, encouraging, and genial. They all provide a safe but challenging environment in which to learn. That culture is essential in any jiu-jitsu school, and this place comes with the highest recommendation.”
Nate - “I started training with Danny and Angela back in early March of 2019. I’ve always been curious about training in BJJ and heard nothing but great things about North Shore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Not only are Danny and Angela awesome instructors but they are super friendly. They go above and beyond for all of their students with both fun events and questions pertaining to the art. At the forefront of all this is how much Danny and Angela stress safe training. Danny is extremely knowledgeable in body mechanics as it pertains to the art and has a very high attention to detail in his teaching. We are not only learning the art the proper way but we are learning is in a safe and controlled environment. Danny and Angela want all of their students to become knowledgeable black belts.”
